Good Reasons to outsource your Project Management

Except for businesses that are project-based organizations, the Project Management Office (PMO) always goes through a feast-and-famine cycle.

I first witnessed this when I was a 6 Sigma Black Belt in an Engine Remanufacturing Division of an American multinational company.  The 6 Sigma movement grew until it became one of thirty over divisions in Caterpillar Inc.  But with the change of the CEO the whole division was folded, and its Vice President had to find a job elsewhere.  All in the span of one year.

I saw it happen again when I joined a medical devices company, to take over the program of setting up a service center in the Philippines. The PMO team kept growing with the addition of new businesses, but just as before, Project Management became a victim of its own success.  The PMO team was reduced to just two persons from a team of more than ten members, and the team members either left or joined other departments.

Why am I telling you this?  As a business owner, all the startup and teardown will cost your business a lot of money.  Your staff will accumulate a lot of experience that will leave the door eventually and probably join your competitors, while your company will not have that valuable knowledge the next time you need to do development work.

There is a better way.

Should you outsource your projects for business expansion, you will save all the startup costs and the growing  pain as your team grows.  You will have a dedicated team that knows your business, has all the records of previous projects, and hits the ground running.  No need for the initial teething issues as your new team learns your business.

And this team will not need to be terminated when your expansion activities die down.  They will be busy doing other projects elsewhere, sharpening their repertoire of tools, upgrading themselves, ready whenever you need them again. To do an even better job than you remembered.

The size of the projects can range from small to large, and since they know your business, they will be ready to start at the drop of a hat.

You will probably still have someone who will work with us for continuity in your team.  But that is all you need to have, and that person may be gainfully employed elsewhere until needed.
